October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This month, pink ribbons will be everywhere, reminding women to make breast health a priority. Performing regular self-exams and scheduling regular checkups with your doctors are important components of a preventive regimen.  But so is paying attention to what you eat.  Consuming foods rich in antioxidants, folate, and phytochemicals can strengthen your immune system and keep your natural cancer fighting defenses in peak condition.  Regular exercise, stress reduction, weight management and adequate sleep will amplify the beneficial effects of all that good nutrition.

Antioxidants and phytochemicals are well known for their neutralizing effects on cancer-causing free radicals in the body.  Foods high in these compounds, which include beta-carotene, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E, are purple, blue, red, orange, and yellow-colored fruits and vegetables as well as nuts and seeds.  Folate is another important cancer-fighting nutrient, and foods high in this B vitamin include sunflower seeds, leafy green vegetables, avocados, oranges, and melons.  A recent American Journal of Epidemiology study found that a higher intake of folate – also known as folic acid – can help lower a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer by as much as 40 percent.

To help you (and your girls) get your day off to a healthy start, Sunrich Naturals has created three delicious, superfood-dense smoothie recipes that can be prepared and consumed in minutes.  Everyone else in your family will love them, too.

Please give them a try and let us know what you think!

Berry Madness Smoothie
Blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries mix happily with SoL, Greek yogurt, pineapple juice and flax seed meal for a delicious, fiber-rich drink.  Blueberries have been found to be particularly effective in inhibiting the growth and spreading of breast cancer tumors – use wild blueberries if possible!

Mocha Avocado Smoothie
This scrumptious eye opener delivers the antioxidant benefit of sunflower seeds, cocoa, and honeydew melon coupled with folate-rich avocado and a touch of coffee.  This creamy crowd pleaser is sure to be a hit.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie
Just like peanut butter and jelly, strawberries and bananas are made for each other.  Blending Vitamin C-rich strawberries and potassium packed bananas with SoL is a quick and tasty way to start your engine at breakfast time or enjoy as a post-workout recovery drink.
